Calgary Expo Pinup

Did this for the Calgary Expo.
The artists attending contributed a pinup for the artbook
that's sold on the show floor.
The originals were auctioned off for charity which was cool.
I had an amazing time at the comic con and the Banff retreat that followed.
I met some mega talented peeps who tore it up at the drink'n'draw!
I think I lost 5lbs from laughing my ace off.
good times!
I did another variant of it
adjusting hue/saturation and levels.
and here's the clean line drawing
I did in Sketchbook Pro
This image was done digitally so
I had to print it out and redraw it for the auction,
since they wanted original art.
***update***
here's an iPhone photo of the physical copy
I made with Carmine Red Col-erase

all characters shown here are original IP
and ©Joe Vriens

  2. The front guy is brilliant :D I take it that's the liquid he breaths in? The colouring on the top is my fave too, more depth somehow.
    *Thumbs up*

  9. Awesome stuff, although I like the top version better (the blue background contrasts nicely with chickie-poo's armour). The only thing that made me scratch my head was what I now assume to be the tip of Cow's tail. For a while there I thought Mr. Monkey-Fish had a collostomy bag or something...

  10. CapnG: I actually laughed out loud at the MC tail comment-you sir crack me up-and I wouldn't give it too much thought as it's just one of my typical random design changes. Although...I'm toying with an idea for these guys and the face on the tail is part of it.

  12. nice...is there a formula for group shots? do you start the group in a big shape? or does the shape form itself as you add characters.

  13. Omar "OX" Rodriguez: If there's a formula I'm not aware of it. I usually just start with one character and feel my way through the rest. You can also rough out some thumbnails and block in shapes to balance the composition. The 'big guys' usually fall to the back of the group, since they will still be seen behind the smaller characters.
hope this brief answer helps a little bit :)
